Why positive communication starts with emotional literacy
People do not communicate well simply because they are told to be positive. They communicate better when they can understand emotions, needs, and response patterns.
In our HKUST Personal Development Program, positive communication is built on emotional literacy first. Participants expand their emotional vocabulary, use emotion cards, and practise non-violent communication by linking emotions to underlying needs and values. That creates a more grounded basis for empathy and expression.
The same programme then moves into gratitude and active constructive responding. This matters because healthy communication is not only about reducing conflict; it is also about building stronger relational habits. When participants learn different response styles and feel the difference through role play, communication becomes observable and trainable.
For schools, universities, and organisations, the lesson is simple: positive communication is not a slogan. It is a skill set built from emotional literacy, reflection, and repeated practice.
