GRAAM Academy is a Hong Kong training practice. We sit between two disciplines: research-backed positive psychology and the character that turns it into judgment. This is the answer we believe our times call for.

01 · Why we exist

The case for character and purpose.

For decades, the measures of a successful life converged into the same narrow track: the right school, the right ladder, the right number on the right line. The young person who did not fit was told to fit harder.

In Hong Kong that track is narrower than most. When secondary students are asked:

Research shows the two are linked: adolescents with a sense of purpose report more hope and greater agency in their daily lives.

AI raises the stakes: When any answer can be retrieved instantly, the value of having an answer drops. What remains valuable is judgment: knowing which question to ask, which answer applies to your situation, which line to question and which to redraw.

Judgment does not come from technique. It comes from a person who knows what they care about, what they are built for, and where they are going.

That is what purpose is.

In the research literature, purpose is defined as a stable and generalised intention to accomplish something that is at once meaningful to the self and of consequence to the world beyond the self.

It has three components
A long-term goal orientationThe ultimate aim a young person is working toward.
A sense of personal meaningA goal worth a young person's time, energy and personal resources.
A commitment to contribute beyond oneselfA desire to contribute to the world beyond oneself.

Young people who have it report greater agency, more hope, and better self-regulation in their studies.

And purpose is developed, not discovered.

We hold it as one of the conditions for a person to reach their potential and to live a life they find fulfilling, and the evidence supports that view: purpose is associated with greater life satisfaction, better psychological health, and stronger engagement in school and at work.

It shapes how we design every programme, and it is what we measure.

02 · Our story

How we got here.

GRAAM Academy began with a shared observation about what most education systems quietly miss.

CHAPTER 01

The realization.

Most education systems are built for standardization. They produce environments where students who do not fit the mold are passed over, even when their potential is real. Our founders saw the same pattern across schools, universities, and workplaces: institutions drift from the people they were built to serve. They optimize for what they can measure. They miss what only humans can give.

CHAPTER 02

Individuals first.

GRAAM as a whole is a project to build adaptable systems. GRAAM Academy works on something narrower and harder: the individuals who live inside those systems. We help people discover their authentic strengths, shape who they are, and find what genuinely drives them. The training is practical, modern, and bilingual, designed to keep working long after the room empties.

CHAPTER 03

Across the rooms.

The need for this work spans every sector. We support a wide range of professionals and organisations to build environments where people can do their best work: team building, management coaching, and applied positive psychology for companies and NGOs. We bridge technology gaps by equipping government bodies with the knowledge to navigate emerging fields like AI and new technologies. The shapes change. The framework holds.

The people behind GRAAM.

GRAAM is built on the practice of those who lead it: graduate training from world-renowned universities, years of facilitation and team development, and direct practitioner work across engineering and product.

Cherry Ma

Co-Founder · Head of Programmes & Training

Cherry helps individuals fulfil their potential through designing and delivering GRAAM Academy's purpose and character programmes. She holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where her capstone research examined how young people in Hong Kong develop purpose, in collaboration with Prof. Kendall Cotton Bronk's Moral Development Lab at Claremont Graduate University. Over eight years she has trained more than 2,000 learners across 20+ Hong Kong organisations in social and emotional learning and entrepreneurial spirit, alongside extensive work with corporate teams and working professionals.

Robin Guyard

Co-Founder · Engineering & Product

Robin leads engineering and product, and builds GRAAM Learn, the learning platform behind our programmes. He has more than ten years' experience in software architecture and knowledge systems. His work has reached millions of users, and as a founder he has led products end-to-end. He works between business and engineering, pairing analytical thinking with user empathy and building internal systems that help teams ship faster. He now focuses on agentic systems: rolling out agents into engineering workflows, building LLM-backed knowledge systems, and designing the operating layers that change how teams decide and deliver.
